TODAY IN DESIGN 1982

A Digital Milestone of Infamy: The Creation of "Elk Cloner".

On January 30, 1982, a new chapter in digital history was unwittingly written by high school student Richard Skrenta, who created the first PC virus, "Elk Cloner". Comprising 400 lines of code and disguised as an Apple boot program, this virus marked the beginning of the era of computer security threats. While relatively harmless, Elk Cloner's ability to replicate itself and spread from computer to computer showcased the vulnerabilities in software design and the need for robust digital security measures. This event served as a wake-up call to the tech industry, highlighting the importance of safeguarding against such digital incursions in the burgeoning age of personal computing.
