TODAY IN DESIGN 1947

The Genesis of Electronic Gaming: The Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device.

On January 25, 1947, Thomas Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann made a pioneering stride in entertainment technology by filing a patent for the "Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device," recognized as the first-ever electronic game. This innovative concept utilized a cathode ray tube, similar to early television sets, to simulate a missile firing at a target. Though rudimentary by today's gaming standards, this invention laid the foundational stone for the video game industry. It marked the beginning of a new era in interactive entertainment, opening the door to endless possibilities in electronic gaming and digital interaction.
