TODAY IN DESIGN 1978

The Birth of Online Communities: The First Computer Bulletin Board System.

On February 16, 1978, the landscape of digital communication took a monumental leap forward with the creation of the first computer bulletin board system (CBBS) in Chicago. This pioneering platform allowed users to connect via a computer and phone line, sharing messages, data, and later, media, setting the foundation for the online forums and social networks that would come to dominate the digital age. CBBS introduced a new way for individuals to gather, discuss, and disseminate information, heralding the beginning of online communities and foreshadowing the interconnectedness of global society through the internet.
