TODAY IN DESIGN 1817
A Bright Night in Baltimore: The Dawn of Gas Street Lighting.
On February 7, 1817, Baltimore illuminated the night in a way no American city had before, becoming the first to be lit by gas street lamps. The inaugural lights at Market and Lemon Streets (now Baltimore and Holliday Streets) marked a significant moment in urban design and public safety. This pioneering use of gas lighting transformed the urban nightscape, extending the day for residents and enhancing the city's vitality and security. Baltimore's adoption of gas street lamps heralded a new era in municipal infrastructure, setting a precedent for cities worldwide and illuminating the path toward modern urban living.
