A Donkey in the Spotlight: Birth of a Political Symbol.

On January 19, 1870, Harper's Weekly featured a cartoon that would solidify a lasting political symbol in the United States – the donkey representing the Democratic Party. This illustration, created by cartoonist Thomas Nast, depicted the donkey to lampoon the Democratic press, but the animal soon became emblematic of the party itself. Nast's use of the donkey symbolized a shift in political communication, where imagery began playing a crucial role in representing and shaping public perception of political entities. The enduring use of the donkey demonstrates how design and imagery can transcend their original context to become powerful symbols in political discourse and identity.
