TODAY IN DESIGN 1965

A New Symbol for Canada: The Maple Leaf Flag.

On February 15, 1965, Canada embraced a new national identity by adopting a red-and-white maple leaf design as its flag, replacing the old Canadian Red Ensign. This change not only marked a significant moment in Canadian history but also introduced a bold symbol of unity and identity. The maple leaf, long associated with Canada and its natural beauty, became a central visual element, representing the country's heritage and aspirations on the global stage. The adoption of the new flag reflected a move towards a distinctly Canadian symbol, celebrated for its simplicity and powerful imagery.
