TODAY IN DESIGN 1879
Global Time Reimagined: Sandford Fleming's Time Zone Proposal.
On February 8, 1879, at a meeting of the Royal Canadian Institute, Sandford Fleming, a Canadian engineer and inventor, first proposed a revolutionary idea: dividing the world into 24 equal time zones and adopting a Universal Standard Time. This visionary concept was designed to solve the confusion caused by the myriad local times then in use, streamlining schedules for railways and improving global communication. Fleming's proposal laid the groundwork for the world's synchronized time system, officially adopted in 1884. This innovation not only facilitated international travel and commerce but also represented a significant leap forward in global coordination and connectivity, showcasing the profound impact of design thinking on society.
